Chapter Ten

While showering before Lee arrives, I reflect on the day I spent with Kevin and Mama. I had a wonderful time. The camaraderie between Kevin and me is familiar. Time spent in his company reminds me of my copy of The Hobbit, worn and treasured. His warm breath on my ear as we embraced in the zoo parking lot was a subtle suggestion of how love might be with us if I surrendered my reluctance to trust him with my heart.

I’m afraid that’s what keeps us from moving forward—my reluctance. History has a way of repeating itself, and Kevin has shown me when things get tough, he runs. He left this house right before Mama came home from the hospital following her incapacitating stroke. Because I wouldn’t admit we could be a couple, he moved out and back into Jasper’s house. He chose to live alone rather than stay here with Mama and me when we needed him the most. Heck, he was still in high school, way too young to commit to us. The only reason he came back was because Jasper put him in the hospital, and following his release, Kevin moved back in with Mama and me. Then Jasper returns, and Kevin runs away to Arizona. Again, because I don’t hold his hand at the funeral services, he runs back to Vegas.

The mild disagreement we had last night in the park had him leaving for home to get away from me and reconnect with Robbie. Now I’m fearful when he returns to Vegas in preparation to move back here, he may change his mind and not come back. He’s been with Robbie for a long time. I’m afraid once Kevin envisions everything he’s giving up for a life with Mama and me, he’ll change his mind and stay with Robbie. Mama’s care can’t compete with Layona Beach and her adoring fans. Besides, Kevin is still grieving for Jasper and shouldn’t be making life-altering decisions right now.

I finish my shower, dry off, and check the closet for something to wear. Lee’s coming soon to pick me up and he doesn’t tolerate tardiness. After pulling on a pair of black Dockers, a white polo shirt and my black, casual blazer, I sit on the edge of my bed to slip into my shoes. Glasses in place, hair combed, casual, comfortable, and understated, I’m ready for Lee to arrive. When I enter the living room, Kevin’s sitting on the sofa leafing through a magazine. He glances up at my entrance and scrutinizes me with a keen eye until I’m fidgeting from his extensive perusal.

He sets the magazine on the coffee table, rises, and prowls the room. His predatory gaze reminds me of a cougar stalking his prey with grace, focus, and patience. He stops, and I shiver at the whisper of his breath upon my face. He reaches for my glasses and removes them. His eyes lock with mine, and my heart accelerates. I’m mesmerized by the yearning look in his eyes with their pupils darkened, leaving only hungry passion upon his countenance.
